So after saying I’m more interested in the darker side of shoegaze here’s something to completely cotradict myself… yet somehow i can’t help liking this track. At first i was really put off by the seemingly simplistic songwriting (even though that’s sortof a shoegaze staple) and somehow the video didn’t help. But eventually I got over my initial bias against (sorry for dropping the h word) contemporary hipsterist shoegaze/dreampop… and once that happened i started to really enjoy their shoegazy take on cute indie-pop (or vice versa?). I especially like the drums and the fuzzy, suffocating guitar sound after 3:04
and the video isn’t that bad either :)
I had a similar experience with another band I feel the need to compare these grrrls_guyys to: Ringo Deathstarr
so if you like them chance is you like the vandelles as well, even though they are a bit less trippy and laconic.
P.S.: i think I’ll post a ringo deathstarr track after this.
so… it took me a while to get back into anything shoegaze-related after being a bit disillusioned by the My Bloody Valentine gig I attended in cologne.i’ve been searching for bands that don’t sound like a MBV (or worse a slowdive or ride) ripoff. Don’t get me wrong, i still like the records of those bands (don’t listen to that much ride tbh) but i think a lot more can be done with the basic sound of shoegaze (which i still find hard to define but it definitely has to evoke a fuzzy and surreal kind of feeling)
so I’ve found this band after a long time of disappointing research, they’re definitely not the be-all and end-all of shoegaze or ambientish guitar music but i kind of like the ‘cultish’ take on the sound, something that seems obvious once you hear it but doesn’t usually occur in other shoegaze-ish music… though some black metal / shoegaze bands might try to evoke such a sound but somehow those black metal bands once they get into a shoegazier sound become very tonal and a bit tacky (please let me know of any band where that’s not the case). not to say that this is very atonal music but it does at least venture deviate from standard western tonality. it does in fact remind me of some of the faster moments of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, while the vocals kind of sound like maybe dredg (circa el cielo) though there’s some other comparison on the tip of my tongue.
yeah as i said this isn’t perfect… the “break” at 4:25 kind of takes me out of the minimalistic feeling (i’d even go as far as saying I can hear a bit of john cage in there) and yeah the vocals in general are not my favourite thing about it.
EDIT: I should say “this track” instead of “this band”, some of their other stuff is a bit more shoegaze-by-the-numbers barring a few darker, more abrasive elements which i enjoy.
